If you use a boiler to heat up your home in the winter, you are going to want to make sure that you take proper care of your boiler in the off-season when you are not using your boiler. The off-season is a great time to engage in preventative maintenance such as clearing the vents and flues, flushing your boiler, and scheduling an annual service call.

1. Clear the Vents

In order for your boiler to operate freely, air needs to be able to flow through the vents that run from your boiler and to your home. If there is anything blocking the air vents, your boiler is not going to be able to work correctly.

Start by checking and making sure that you have nothing blocking any of the registries or vents in your home. Make sure that you don't have furniture or other items on top of the vents.

Then, take the grills off your vents that cover up the opening on the floor. Wash the vents off using some water and soap. Use your vacuum to clean-up and remove dirt from inside of the vents. If you have not had your vents cleaned in a while, you are going to want to have your vents professionally cleaned as well.

2. Clean the Boiler Room

Next, you should clean the room that you keep your boiler in. Dust in the boiler room can get into the components of your boiler and compromise its ability to function properly. Keeping the space around your boiler clean is an essential part of keeping your boiler clean and ready to go.

3. Flush Your Boiler

Then you are going to want to flush your boiler. Over time, the minerals that are in your local water supply can build up on your boiler. This results in scale building up in your boiler. Scale is not a good side effect; scale can damage the components inside of your boiler and can also result in the energy efficiency of your boiler decreasing over time.

This damage and decrease in energy efficiency can be avoided by flushing your boiler. This is a job that is generally best left to a professional if you have never done it before.

4. Schedule A Yearly Check-Up

Finally, the off-season is a great time to schedule a yearly check-up appointment for your boiler. A yearly inspection will help ensure that all the parts on your boiler are working correctly. Yearly maintenance inspections allow you to keep up with small maintenance tasks and repairs that will prevent a major failure of your boiler and ensure that your boiler continues to work effectively for the long-term.
