Business On The Water: Services You May Need If You Ship By Boat

When you import and export the goods your manufacturing plant produces, you generally move things about by boat or barge rather than by plane. The boat/barge method tends to be cheaper than plane by far because you are not paying for the jet fuel needed to transport heavy goods by air. As such, you will also need some other related services. Secure the following to reduce the overall costs charged to intermediate sellers and consumers.

Barge Loading and Unloading

If you use barges, there is a good chance that you are only shipping products locally. Barges can go into ocean territory, but they do not tend to travel to other countries. Docks are full of companies that assist product manufacturers with barge unloading and loading services, which typically include crane service, claw booms for grabbing and lifting items in and out of the barges, and transferring product between barges. They can also transfer products to waiting trucks or place products on the docks where forklifts can pick up products and load it onto trucks. (The only exception are automobiles, which are either lifted by crane or driving onto the auto haulers.) Similar methods may apply to shipping by freight liners.

For more information on barge unloading services, contact a company such as Sundbeck Inc.

Ocean Freightliners

When you ship a lot of product or a lot of oversized products overseas, then you need the services of an international shipper. These shippers utilize massive, ocean-going freighters to take your products globally. The items are lifted by crane onboard the top deck or wheeled into the ship manually by forklift and human labor. It will cost you more to use these freighters than it does the barges, but you are shipping products into the global market. Using an ocean liner still costs less than shipping by cargo plane too, so there is that.

Waste Management

As a manufacturing industry, you undoubtedly have a lot of industrial waste as well. A lot of this waste is transported via barge to specific locations. If you need barge services for waste management, be sure to contact a company that specifically manages waste. There are waste barges that handle everything from typical residential garbage to industrial and manufacturing waste to nuclear waste in a manner that is safe and in compliance with environmental protection laws. If you do your research on these companies in advance, you will be better able to choose one to manage the waste your company produces.
